Five DIY Fall Sensory Bags for Babies

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Babies are naturally inquisitive. They love looking at and especially touching the world around them, but all that touching can sometimes lead to a lot of clean up. Sensory bags are the perfect solution to let your little one explore, view, learn, and touch, without the hassle of a mess to clean up later.

Sensory bags are exactly what they sound like. Bags filled with a variety of objects to engage your little ones senses. Buy a box of pinch to close Ziploc bags, fill them with objects of your choosing, seal them up, and let our baby touch away. For really messy bags, we sometimes use painters tape and secure them to the floor so there is less of a chance of the bags being thrown around and breaking.

Our baby is now 7 months old and sitting up completely independently which has led to a whole new world of fun and exploring and is the perfect time to introduce some new sensory bags. With this being his first fall, there are so many fun things he has yet to see, touch, and explore. So I created a list of some of the fun sensory bags we created for him to enjoy this fall!

Bag #1 - Leaf & Acorn Sensory Bag

For this bag, we went to the park and took a nice long walk along one of the wooded trails. We talked and looked at all kinds of different colors leaves and trees, and collected a variety of colors and shapes of leaves and acorns for our bag. When we got home, again we placed them all in a bag and sealed it up to enjoy.

Bag #2 - Pumpkin Sensory Bag

This was my favorite sensory bag to create, because to make it we carved our first pumpkin with our baby. We used our baby led weaning splat mat, a long sleeve bib, and sat on the floor to cut our pumpkin open so our baby could watch and touch as we did. He loved holding the top of the pumpkin as we pulled all of the insides out and stuck them in a bag. Then we sealed the orange pulp and seeds up for him and let him enjoy smashing them around.

Bag #3 - Corn Sensory Bag

We are lucky enough to be surrounded by farms, so when the corn is finished for the year, one of our neighbors always passes a few stalks our way for decorating. We pull off one of the cobs, let the kernels dry out, and shuck it to fill a bag with hard corn. If you aren't surrounded by farms you can buy decorative corn at the grocery store, or feed mills or supply stores sell animal corn already in bags. Simply fill a ziploc bag with some of it, seal, and let your baby touch away.

Bag #4 - Candy Sensory Bag

This bag was perfect for Halloween, and we were able to use any leftover candy we got from trick or treating, especially since our little guy can't eat candy yet anyhow.

We used candy corn and bought pumpkin shaped candy corn from the dollar store to go with them, and to make a fun seasonal bag. There are so many other kinds of candy that could work great as well though such as, sour patch kids, skittles, or even sweet tarts. I love these choices because they are all hard, colorful, and would make a bag that's fun to look at.

Bag #5 - Fall Colors & Shapes Sensory Bag

For the last bag I bought clear hair gel at the dollar store and used food coloring to dye the gel the fall color of my choosing. I then chose random fall color objects to finish it off. Beads, sequins, and even a little glitter made this bag a fun one to mix around and touch.
